I spoke to The Lost Angeles Times about the prospect of actor Matt McConaughey running for governor of Texas. As much as I care about public policy and ideas, I don't think these are necessarily the keys to winning a statewide election. Personality can often trump policy. We shall see if McConaughey runs, and if so, whether he can pull it off or not. Below is what I told the newspaper about McConaughey's potential appeal to voters.
“Personality trumps policy,” he said, likening McConaughey to former President Trump or Jesse Ventura, the former professional wrestler turned governor of Minnesota. “I’m not sure how important specific stances will be to a general election audience when you have someone like Matt McConaughey running. These celebrity candidates have a different appeal.”
